The Pertosa Caves

The Pertosa cave or “Grotte dell’Angelo” are located in the Muraglione locality in the province of Salerno, Campania (the southern Italian region in red).

Nearby this place there is the River Tanagro. This caves are in the Alburni mountains, 500 metres far from Pertosa town, and they stretch for 3000 metres, they are the longest caves in Campania. (A view of the Pertosa caves)

The formation of the Pertosa caves goes back to 35 millions years ago, and these caves are ones of the most important in Italy and in the southern regions.

They are the only caves which are crossed by a subterranean river: River Negro. The Petrosa caves are characterized by the particular stalagmites and stalactites that give this caves a suggestive atmosphere.

Another particularity of this place, particulary appreciated by the foreign and Italian tourists, is that to visit it you need to use typical boats, in order to cross a little lake originated from the River Negro (in the photo below).
