Proccessing Images: The size matters a lot !

Here we will learn how to transform a 4,5 Mb photo to a 19,5 Kb photo, with the same quality in the blog  ...

All of us have a wonderful 12 Mpixels camera. When we make photos, they are about 4,5 Mb ( 4,5000,000 bytes ) or more. 

This means that we will have to wait for a lot to upload the photo. Moreover, if blogger gives us a space of about 100 Mb, we won't be able to use many photos in our blog. So we need to reduce the size of our photos. But we don't want to loose quality !

 

Original photo:  4272 x 2848 pixels. Size 4,5 Mb

There are many image processing programs. Photoshop, PhotoScape, Microsoft Photo Editor .... And the GIMP, or XNView, free software ... They run in many Operative Systems...

First of all, we have to resize the image to 400 pixels ... If our screen has 800 x 600 pixels, or 1200 x 800 pixels, why do I have to include an image that is 4000 x 3000 pixels ?. So we have to scale or transform the original image to 400 pixels weight. The height will adjust automatically ... If we save the image with a new name ( to keep the original ) we will get something like this

But this is a JPG file. JPG it is a standard of compressed files, like MP3. We can control how compressed it may be ( the more you compress the file, the more quality you loose). I have selected 35% JPG compression... and I get ...

So we started with a 4,5 Mb (4,500,000 bytes) file, and I finish with a 20 Kb ( 20,000 bytes ) image. Quick to upload, no lost quality.

Obiously, if you download these 3 different images, sizes and qualities are tottally different, but in the blog look like the same
