3 periods of his legislating: 

1. 1786 bis 1800/1803: increasing influence of Haydn and Mozart -> op. 2, 7, 10, 13, 1. symphonie in C-Dur op. 21, first string quartets


2. 1800/1803 bis 1815: development of personal style -> works with high faculty of expression and emotions -> 2. to 8. symphonie


3. 1814 bis 1818: stegnancy (conditional on his illness) -> „Missa solemnis“, 9. symphonie, Ode „An die Freude“, piano sonatas op. 106, 109, 110, 111, string quartets op. 127, 130, 131, 132, 135

-> he wrote his works in the epoch of romantic


Beethoven enhanced the expression’s facility of music : 


- enlargement of menuets of sonatas and symphonies to a impassionate scherzo and enlargement of the final, that had just been lively before, to the peak of the complete works’ development
- Enlargement of the assumed orchestra of Haydn
- enriched in colour and sound
